OLD DOMINION EYE CARE, INC.,a general ophthalmology private practice in the beautiful Northern Neck of Virginia on the Chesapeake Bay, is expanding and seeking a board certified or board eligible general ophthalmologist with military training and background.  Partnership/ownership available.

ABOUT THE OWNER: I am a retired Navy ophthalmologist [1989], trained at Bethesda Naval Hospital under Captain Lew Seaton [1973-76] and I am one of the Harrar Alumni. I received Fellowship training in Cornea and External Disease at Georgetown under Mike Lemp, MD, 1980-81.   In 1989, upon retiring, I opened Old Dominion Eye Care’s first office in Kilmarnock, Virginia and in 1993, opened a second office in Tappahannock, Virginia.  In 2006, the practice moved to a new location in Kilmarnock, specifically designed and built for an ophthalmology practice.

PRACTICE DESCRIPTION:  Old Dominion Eye Care in a general practice, with heavy emphasis on cataract and external disease, dry eyes and oculo-plastics.  We treat a large glaucoma population and have many diabetics.  The internal medicine and family practice community in both locations refer to our practice.  Surgery is performed in the outpatient facilities at Rappahannock General Hospital in Kilmarnock and Riverside Tappahannock General Hospital in Tappahannock with the latest in ophthalmic surgical equipment.  My staff includes a Board Certified Optometrist, 3 technicians, of which 2 are COA’s. One of the COA’s is also a registered optician.  We have a full service optical shop with a second, full time, registered optician, and supply eyeglasses to both offices.  The practice is supervised by a very experienced Administrator.  The new office in Kilmarnock was built expressly for ophthalmic care, and includes 4 identical lanes, a minor OR, YAG Laser room, visual fields room, and a TOPCON OCT.  A local long-standing Optometric practice in the community recently closed its doors due to health concerns of the owners, and this has increased our patient volume.  We have Retina support in Kilmarnock from the Wagner Retina Group of Virginia Beach and in Tappahannock from the Retina Institute of Virginia in Richmond.

JOB DESCRIPTION: Seeking an individual with a solid knowledge in the medical and surgical diseases of the eye, strong work ethic, personable, with the ability to work in a high paced practice with all levels of patients.  A working knowledge of neurology, dermatology as relates to the head and neck, and basic oculo-plastics would be an asset as there are none of these specialties in our area.  Board Certification in Ophthalmology is preferred.  Proven skills as a cataract and anterior segment surgeon in required. A strong working knowledge of advanced phacoemulsification techniques is essential.  Retina and vitreous surgery and laser ability would be a plus.  The desire to perform glaucoma procedures would be a growth area for the practice, as would retina laser procedures and intraocular injections for macular disease.  I have now reached the point where I would like to cut back and turn the practice over to a younger ophthalmologist, preferably one with military service and the work ethic and all around medical background that we instill in our military physicians.
